IN 1938, WHEN LIGHTHOUSE INN WAS FIRST OPENED, THE PLAN WAS TO RENT OUT ROOMS FOR THE 1938 SEASON AND THEN DEVELOP THE PROPERTY – PLANS WERE TO BUILD A NUMBER OF HOUSES.
AFTER THE 1938 SEASON, GLADYS AND EVERETT STONE DECIDED TO CONTINUE RENTING ROOMS, AND COOKS WERE HIRED TO PROVIDE MEALS. THE INN ORIGINALLY OPENED AT THE END OF JUNE AND CLOSED AFTER LABOR DAY WEEKEND.
BY THE 1960’S, THE SEASON WAS EXTENDED AND RAN FROM JUNE 15 TO THE WEEKEND AFTER LABOR DAY. THIS WAS PARTLY DUE TO A LARGE GROUP – SIMPLEX FROM GARDNER, MA. WHICH TOOK OVER THE INN DURING JUNE.
WHEN JONATHAN STONE AND THEN GREGORY STONE JOINED THEIR PARENTS, BOB AND MARY, IN THE RUNNING OF THE INN IN 1978-86, THE DECISION WAS MADE TO EXTEND THE SEASON FROM MEMORIAL DAY TO COLUMBUS DAY. THEY THEN EXTENDED THE SEASON TO AS EARLY AS MOTHER’S DAY DURING THE LATE ‘80’S AND ‘90’S BUT THEN RETURNED TO MEMORIAL DAY AS OPENING WEEKEND AFTER 2000.
THIS SEASON, BECAUSE OF COVID 19, LIGHTHOUSE INN IS OPENING ON JUNE 17TH, RETURNING TO THE “OLD DAYS” OF OPENING MID-JUNE.
